Glengarry Glen Ross

written by David Mamet

Directed by Caleb Arthur Stone

First Banana Productions is proud to present the first play of its 1997 season, Glengarry Glen Ross. David Mamet's play is the sometimes humorous, often intense story of four shifty real estate salesmen coping with a cutthroat sales contest.

The 1984 Pulitzer Prize-winner for drama, Glengarry Glen Ross is a scathing portrayal of the American dream gone astray. In the dog-eat-dog setting of a shabby real-eastate office, four salesmen lie, cheat, curse, plead, steal, despair and connive in an attempt to get on "the board" -- the office chart that marks who is ahead in the sales race. Number one in sales gets a Cadillac; number two, a set of steak knives; three and four get canned. But the play is not so much about modern-day Willy Lomans as it is about spirit, toughness and the will to survive.

The cast

Robert Kimbrough plays Shelly Levene, a veteran salesman in a recent slump, reduced to begging for the much-anticipated new leads. Robert's Madison theater experience includes, most recently, Dr.Faustus, which he directed and produced at Brave Hearts, A Man For All Seasons with Strollers Theatre, and The Crucible at the Madison Rep.

Brad Gottschalk plays Ricky Roma, the office hotshot, who is only a step away from winning top prize in the contest. Brad wrote and directed for First Banana's ...like a fish without a bicycle last fall, and also appeared in the company's production of Christopher Durang's Titanic in 1995.

Steven Dast plays George Aaronow, the meek "follower" of the group of salesmen. Steven appeared in The Cricket on the Hearth with the Madison Creative Arts Program this winter.

Mark Huismann plays the resentful Dave Moss, who deals with his job frustration by hatching a plot to steal the coveted leads from the office. Mark starred as Barry Champlain in First Banana's productions of Talk Radio, and also appeared in Titanic and CTM's Secret Garden.
