First Banana Productions was founded in 1995 by friends Chance Michaels, Mark Huisman, and David Gee, with the goal of bringing little-known, bizarre comedies to the Madison stage. Its first production, that fall, was Christopher Durang's Titanic, the definitely bizarre story of a very disfunctional family aboard the doomed ocean liner.

Hailed as "one of Madison's most exciting theater companies" by The Wisconsin State Journal, First Banana has received wide support for its interesting mix of contemporary classics, such as Burn This and Equus, with such newer, less-known works as Tales of the Lost Formicans and the Western Hemisphere Premiere of Dogs of the Blue Gods and Blitzbreeker and the Chicken From Hell.
