The Best Man
By Gore Vidal
Directed by Joyce Conway
Currently in a revival on Broadway to critical acclaim, the story is set in the political landscape of 1960, Gore Vidal spins a web exposing back room drama in a long dead notion that political conventions actually select Presidential candidates. He, also, exposes the myth that by gone elections were more genteel.
Wm Russell, former Secretary of State, needs 50 votes to secure the nomination. His ruthless opponent, Joe Cantwell, threatens to force Russell out of the race by releasing Russell's psychiatric records stolen from the doctor's office. Morally righteous, Russell struggles with the decision to retaliate by "slinging his mud" at Cantwell. Of course, the best man wins!!
