The Shoemaker and the Elves

By Karen Boettcher-Tate

Directed by Ann Breitenbach

This timeless play set to music is about poor Lockhart Cobblestone and his wife; played by Garrett Patrick and Katy Bengsch; who is a kind shoemaker with a gentle heart yet little money. Despite their problems, the generous Cobblestones help an old beggar woman; played by Maddy OíNeill; by giving her their last pair of shoes. Now the Cobblestones have only enough leather to make just a single pair of shoes. The penniless man sets the material out to work on the next morning. During the night five endearing elves; played by Katie Schimdt, Garrett Nelson, Madeline Tompach, Gracia Clark and Hannah Dawson; enter his shop and create the most incredible and magical shoes the town of Clankbottom has ever seen. The Cobblestones persuade Mrs. Snootbottom; played by Amber Quamme; to try the shoes on. She likes them so much she gives the Cobblestones enough money to pay their rent, buy more leather and a plump turkey bird. This does not make the Cobblestones mean landlady Sneerella; played by Amanda Breitenbach; happy; she wants to throw them out of their house. Word spreads of the wonderful shoes and soon everyone is buying shoes; from the Mayor (Katherine Tompach) to Loretta La Pointe (Bethany Patrick) and Zoom Corrigan (Anna Rupp). Widow Perkins (Stephanie Breitenbach) and the townspeople (Bethany Bennett and Emily Seidlinger) also benefit from the elves magical shoes and the kindness of the Cobblestones.
