Debris

Written and directed by Marty Mulhern, author of The Sitcom Family and Buck Mulligan's Revenge

Miles McCarthy is a teacher, recovering from the trauma of a favorite student's suicide, when he learns of his father's death. Returning to his home town of Debris, Wisconsin to help his mother, he accepts a teaching position at his old high school. Familiar places, family, old friends, and former teachers trigger a flood of memories from his youth.

Meanwhile, his job turns from challenging to dangerous with the return from juvenile detention of Preston Wolff. The life of modern small towns, and the unique plight of modern public school teachers in the age of Columbine, are portrayed vividly in Debris.

Marty Mulhern's original plays--Favorite Son (1980), The Man Who Laughs (1982), The Sitcom Family (1991), Bon Voyage, Brendan (1992), and Buck Mulligan's Revenge (1995)-were among the most popular at Madison's Broom Street Theater. The Man Who Laughs was revived in 1998 for an off-off-Broadway production.
