As Bees In Honey Drown

By Douglas Carter Beane

This sophisticated comedy satirizes one of the most relentless industries in our celebrity-obsessed society, the creation of "hot" young things, which the media have learned to mass-produce with efficiency and zeal.

Evan Wyler is a young New York writer savoring the success of his debut novel when he captures the attention of Alexa Vere de Vere, a woman of mystery who makes the world of celebrity her home. A record producer and a film agent, she seems to have connections to everyone, and she offers Evan a handsome fee to write a screenplay of her life story &endash; David Bowie has agreed to play her father. Just spend time with me, she says, and you'll learn everything you need to know. What follows are Armani suits, the best hotels and all the accoutrements of fame. To Evan, it's like falling into the world of Aunti Mame, Sally Bowles and Holly Golightly all rolled into one. But then he discovers a secret about Alexa, and he sets out to make sure everyone finds out what it is.

As Bees In Honey Drown had a very successful run off-Broadway in 1997 and is being performed to enthusiastic audiences around the country. The New York Times called it "an extremely entertaining fable for an age that always chooses image over substance." With a terrific cast and design team, the show will be up to the Rep's high standards and a laugh-filled conclusion to the 1999/2000 season.
