Love in Naples

By Rick Ponzio

Directed by Rick Ponzio

Love in Naples is a slapstick comedy set in Late Renaissance Naples. Leandro was thought to have drowned. His fiancée, Beatrice, is being forced to marry Leandro’s father, Pantalone by her mother, Il Dottore to provide an heir for the two families. Disguised as a young boy, Beatrice runs away only to be challenged on a street by the unrecognizable Leandro, who swam away from a shipwreck. Defeating Leandro, Beatrice recognizes him as he pines for her aloud. With the help of their servants Truffaldina and Francischino, the young lovers plot to trick their parents Pantalone and Dottore into admitting their past love for each other and tying the knot.

Auditions

Auditions will be held on the following days:

2/3/2014
2/4/2014

The University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc University Theatre has scheduled auditions for its spring production of Love in Naples, written and directed by Rick Ponzio, UW-Manitowoc associate lecturer of communication/theater arts. Auditions are open to both students and community members and will be held Monday, February 3, and Tuesday, February 4, at 6:00 p.m. in the University Theatre. Participants only need to attend one audition session.

The play will be performed in the style of the Italian Comedy or Commedia dell’ Arte. The director is looking for actors who are very physically and vocally expressive. The style demands agility and excellent timing. Additional opportunities for performers might include: jugglers, tumblers, singers and musicians. The production will also need crew members, stage managers, and marketing and production personnel. Students involved in the production and enrolled in the University for spring classes can sign up for college credit by taking CTA 131.

Prepared material is not necessary to audition. Participants will read from a variety of roles from selected scenes in the script, demonstrating movement and vocal work and improvisation. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a photo snapshot and acting resume if they have one. Scripts will be available in the UW-Manitowoc Administrative Services Office at the start of the spring semester.

Rehearsals will begin as soon as the play is cast, with approximately 22 total rehearsals. Most rehearsals will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00–5:00 p.m., and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday and Wednesday evening rehearsals as schedules dictate. The show will be performed April 9-12 at 7:30 p.m. in the UW-Manitowoc University Theatre.
