By Nathan Fosbinder
Directed by Catie O'Donnell, Music Direction by Mark Wurzelbacher
In 2018, MTM held a workshop performance of a new musical by Madison native Nathan Fosbinder. Audiences saw a reading of the new piece HEPHAESTUS, plus renderings of the costumes, 3D samplings of the set, early demos, and a staged reading with a professional cast. We've spent the last year thinking hard about the suggestions we received and have come up with the final product, and the first piece to complete the Wisconsin New Musicals Cycle.
HEPHAESTUS is the story of the God who dared to be different. Cast out by his mother, the jealous and powerful Hera, and desperate for the love of Aphrodite, he reaches into his soul and identifies his strength as an artisan to win his spot back on Mount Olympus...where, it turns out, the "lame" God was one of the most powerful assets. Soaring contemporary music and the Greek traditions of comedy and tragedy mesh together in this world premiere production by Madison native and NYU Musical Theatre Writing MFA graduate, Nathan Fosbinder.
