Guys and Does
By book & lyrics by Frederick Heide & Lee Becker; music by Paul Libman
The Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre is very excited to bring American Folklore Theatre’s hilarious hit show, “Guys & Does” to Beaver Dam on January 27 and 28.
Promising “more bang for da buck,” “Guys & Does” tells the story of Fritz Dingleheimer. Numbed by the mindless repetition of his job at the Nekoosa paper mill, Fritz can’t wait to drink some beer in the peace and quiet found in the Northern pines on his annual deer-hunting trip. Except this time his only companion is Duane Puddles, a local oddball who knits and loves self-help books. Duane wants to marry Fritz’s daughter, Susie, and hopes to gain Fritz’s blessing on the trip. However, he has trouble dealing with the idea that he has to kill “Bambi’s brudda.”
Along the way, the two hunters encounter a magical talking deer, Staghart of the Golden Horns— a centuries-old white buck, and tuneful hilarity ensues. They also meet Joe Jimmy Ray Bob Johnson III, a careless hunter from Texas who is out to bag the rare white deer even though shooting one is illegal in Wisconsin. The same actor who portrays Joe Jimmy Ray Bob Johnson III also portrays Staghart creating a situation where the hunter is also the hunted. Yes, the hunt for the wily whitetail is on in this smash hit musical comedy, GUYS & DOES!
This hilarious musical comedy is definitely a show for hunters and non-hunters alike, exploring various approaches to this ancient, vital practice and the role of the hunter in a changing world. “We are one of the first generations who don’t look at the hunter as a hero and leader in our society,” says writer Fred “Doc” Heide. “And yet the ethical hunter has a profound wisdom and understanding of our balance with nature. Hunters were the first conservationists. Following this example, we might all learn to treat the world around us with similar sensitivity.” This show is targeted towards all ages.
