Winter Joy, Celebration!

Directed by Lisa Thurrell

Appealing to families and launching a new tradition, Winter Joy, Celebration! concert will feature premiere's by Robert Cleary, Lisa Thurrell and Kiro Kopulos, to music created by composer Alderman Thomas Powell, Benjamin Britten and Robert Rich. The production is a creative alternative to other community holiday offerings. This concert promises enjoyment for all, engaging the sense of art, nature and community.

Cleary's premiere is a humorous work, Afternoon of a Who, to music by Powell. Performance artist Kopulos has created a piece that deals with the solstice and the metaphors of transformation titled standing-still-sun. Thurrell's new choreography is about the nisse, boreal fairies, and a little girl's dance among them one glittering winter night, set to Britten's beloved Ceremony of Carols and Songs. Kanopy students combine with the professional company for this concert. Guest artist Kristanne Connolly, of Connolly Dance Company, will perform with the Kanopy Dance Company.

New York costume designer David Quinn, a Conover, WI, native, will outfit the dancers in shimmering fantastic costumes for the Cleary and Thurrell premieres. Quinn will be in Madison for final fittings and the concert. He will be available to talk about his work with interested students and others. Lighting designer, Matt Kerr will give the stage its seasonal glow.
