The Little Match Girl

By Hans Christian Andersen

Directed by Renaye Leach

PlayTime Productions’ cast of young actors ages 8-15 will bring Hans Christian Andersen’s beautiful tale The Little Match Girl to life at 15 theatres and other venues in Madison and around Dane County, including, for the first time, the Playhouse at the Overture Center for the Arts.

The Little Match Girl takes place on a snowy New Year’s eve. A poor girl is selling matches on the street, with few takers. She finds that when she lights the matches herself, she can envision the warm, festive, sumptuous New Year’s celebrations that others are enjoying inside their homes. The Little Match Girl’s favorite vision is of her beloved grandmother, and she lights her final match hoping to see her. Will this sweet girl, forgotten by the ordinary people who walk past her on the street, find her way to her doting grandmother’s embrace? The Little Match Girl is a touching, inspiring winter story for our challenging economic times.

PlayTime Productions creates community theatre by children, for children. Since 1979, its all-youth casts have delighted audiences around Dane County with original theatrical versions of classic fairy tales and other stories like Snow White (Spring 2009), The Snow Queen (Fall 2008), and Princess and the Pea (Spring 2008). Founded by Teddy Studt and directed by Renaye Leach, PlayTime Productions is dedicated to bringing “a little magic” into the lives of the 7,000 Dane County residents who attend Playtime’s productions each year. These high-quality theatrical performances are offered free or at very low cost for the entire family in venues large and small, from the Overture Center for the Arts in downtown Madison to the Belleville High School to the South Madison Health and Family Center-Harambee. This season, PlayTime Productions is especially thrilled to be making its debut in the Playhouse at the Overture Center for the Arts on November 20th at 7:00pm! In honor of the occasion and in the spirit of The Little Match Girl, PlayTime will hold a canned food drive at this performance. Audiences are invited to contribute nonperishable goods.

Produced by PlayTime Productions at various locations, in Madison and around Dane County. See below.
