The Abduction from the Seraglio

By W.A. Mozart

Directed by Alison Moritz

Ottoman Empire, 17th century. A Spanish nobleman arrives at a pasha's palace to rescue his fiancée, who was captured during a shipwreck. Together they discover that different cultures need not always clash, and romantic longing comes in many forms.

Although this is an opera - one of Mozart's earliest hits - it has spoken English dialogue between numbers. One of the roles, Pasha Selima, is dialogue-only.

Auditions

Auditions will be held on the following days:

12/4/2017

Audition is solely for the spoken role of Pasha Selim in Mozart's "The Abduction from the Seraglio."

This is a paid, non-Equity, speaking, non-singing role.

Physical Description: male, age 35-50, must be 6' or taller, romantic leading-man type.

Pasha Selim is a spoken role that interacts considerably with the other principal artists (and is often sung “at” by them). The dialogue is in English, but the singing is in German, so the performer must take the time to memorize the meaning behind lines that are being sung to him, so he can react. Dialogue must be fully memorized for the first rehearsal.

Although "Abduction" is a comedy, the role of Pasha Selim is not – he is a serious ruler, with both a romantic streak and a sense of the Enlightenment.

Note: Dialogue is not miked at Madison Opera, so must be able to project into 1,000-seat theater.

AUDITIONS are Monday, December 4, 2017, starting at 6pm at the Madison Opera Center, 335 W Mifflin St.

Actors should be prepared to present a 1-2 minute monologue. Excerpts from the show’s dialogue will be sent once an audition is scheduled.
