Our Town

By Thornton Wilder

Directed by Miranda Hawk

A classic story told in a new way…

Considered one of the best plays of our time, Our Town ignites the imagination and warms the heart with love and loss, life and death, reflections of the past and inspiration for the future. But it’s not a new story. Thornton Wilder’s play has been produced hundreds of times over the decades and across the world, and it’s not losing momentum. Samuel French lists over 70 productions of Our Town to be produced in 2018 as of this writing. Considered innovative staging in 1938, Our Town broke ground on the traditional theatrical expectation by removing realistic scenery and offering the audience a true experience in the ‘art of storytelling.’ No one would argue that Thornton Wilder knows how to tell a story.

But we are telling this story from a new perspective…

Traditionally, Thornton Wilder’s character of the stage manager/narrator walks the audience through the streets of Grover’s Corners, the lives of fictional characters, their marriages, their death and reflections on those left behind. Audiences have come to expect the Stage Manager to be an older male actor, speaking to the audience with a wise and charming tone, bringing us (the audience) comfort as we check our own experiences against this beautiful story.

But this production flips the narrative. Madison College Performing Arts explores Our Town from the unassuming but sharp lens of the female protagonist, Emily Webb. Our Stage Manager is a young female, reflecting the experience, hopes and dreams of the young Emily; to see the town, life and inspiration of the future… Imagining the possibilities…
