Menace To Society: A Mormon In Milwaukee

By Liza Sipos

Directed by Doug Reed

What do you do when your world stops making sense?

Emma Hinckley is at a crossroads. Raised in the comforting cocoon of the Mormon Church, Emma’s trip into the forbidden world of alcohol, kissing, and Google searches convinces her that the world is wilder than she’s ever known.

Auditions

Auditions will be held on the following days:

10/21/2017
10/22/2017

October 21st & October 22nd, 4:00pm to 5:30 pm.

At Broom Street Theater, 1119 Williamson St.
The audition will consist of readings from the script, and possible improv exercises. Please arrive on time, and dressed to move. Lack of a headshot and resume will not disqualify you, but bring them if you’ve got them.

Seeking four female-presenting performers:
Emma will be played by the author.
Alice (mid twenties) is Emma’s best friend - trying hard to find a husband, and trying harder to ignore her crush on Emma. Loves the church so much she is willing to give up a huge part of her identity to stay a part of it.
Stacy (19) has just become marriage-eligible, and is determined to find a husband before she’s 20.
Karen (29 yrs, 10 mos, & 12 days) has just 48 days left in the singles church before she must join the Family church… as a spinster! Karen is also a “Molly Mormon” which means she has the energy similar to a kindergarten teacher.
Maggie (mid twenties) is a True Believer and chronic oversharer. She’s a little awkward as well.

Seeking five male presenting performers:
Joseph Smith (mid 30s - mid 40s) -Founds Mormon Church. finds golden plates in his backyard, lives in Emma’s head.
The Bishop (40s - 50s) is the gentle, yet firm, shepherd trying to keep the young people in line and on the straight and narrow path. S’mores, anyone?
David (20s) is a floozy. He’s the kind of boy who’ll hold hands with any girl who makes him cookies.
Brad (20s) is living with a horrible secret. He dated a non-Mormon woman… and they did it.
Logan (20s - 30s) is a non-Mormon man, the first that Emma has ever known. He is grounded and understands more than Emma realises.
There are a few other walk-on characters who will be double cast. Every actor in the show will play additional walk-on roles with the exception of Emma and Alice.
We hope to have a couple of read throughs before the end of the year. Rehearsals will start in earnest right after New Year’s. If you have any questions, please email doug@bstonline.org
