Dark Nights: Baba Yaga and other dreams

Directed by Lisa Thurrell

In March, Kanopy premieres ?Dark Nights: Baba Yaga,? a dark and fanciful dance-drama featuring the masks, puppets, and sets of artist Heidi Cooper along with inspired choreography from director Robert Cleary. In traditional Russian tales, Baba Yaga is portrayed as a hag who flies through the air in a mortar, using the pestle as a rudder and sweeping away her own tracks with a broom made from silver birch. She lives in a log cabin that moves around on a pair of dancing chicken legs. The keyhole to her front door is a mouth filled with sharp teeth; the fence outside is made with human bones with skulls on top. In the folk tale ?Vasilissa the Beautiful,? a young girl is sent to visit Baba Yaga on an errand and is captured for the witch?s evening meal. To win her freedom, Vasilissa must perform three impossible tasks, which she solves using a magic doll given to her by her mother. Cleary and Cooper bring this folk tale vividly to life through dance, puppetry, masks, and music; costumes are designed by David Quinn. Expect imagination run wild! Also on this program is the Midwest premiere of Kerry Parker?s ?Fates,? plus dark favorites by Lisa Thurrell and Kiro Kopulos.
